Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is a historic seaport, with history dating back to the early 18th century. The Inner Harbor was the nation’s leading shipbuilding site in the 18th century, and a major site for oyster canning beginning in 1840, and steel-working the second half of the 19th century.

Baltimore sits on the Chesapeake Bay, which is the largest estuary in the United States and is one of the most productive bodies of water in the world. The Chesapeake watershed spans 64,000 squares miles, covering parts of six states — Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

In 1980, the Inner Harbor area underwent a major revitalization with the addition of many world-class attractions, including the National Aquarium, the Holocaust Memorial, Maryland Science Center, and Harborplace, a festival marketplace with a multitude of restaurants and shops, as well as the Gallery Mall.
